Garissa University College (GUC) established the Privately Sponsored Students Programme (PSSP) programme in 2013. PSSP is an effort aimed at increasing access to university education for those unable to secure government sponsorship at undergraduate level and those willing to further their education. PSSP supports the University College mission of imparting knowledge and skills through innovative teaching, research and consultancy. PSSP also enhances attraction and retention of staff by contributing to staff welfare; and augments Corporate Social Responsibility of the University College.
The Directorate of PSSP manages PSSP activities on day to day basis. These include enrolment of PSSP students; marketing of PSSP academic programmes and short courses; and advising on quality, standards and demand for PSSP programmes, coordinates engagement of part-time lecturers, providing teaching/ learning resources for PSSP programmes.
GUC offers innovative market-oriented academic programmes at Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Master’s levels housed in five schools. The PSSP students’ intake is done in April/May, August/September and December/January. Students can conveniently choose from a variety of modes of study that include full time, evening, weekend, School based over the holidays and Open, Distance and E-Learning (ODEL).
The Directorate of PSSP also provides Short Courses intended to capacity build participants in their areas of work. The courses include leadership, management and administration, Enterprise Development, Business Plan Preparation, Grant Proposal Writing, Fundraising and resource Mobilization, Effective and Gender and Development. The Directorate also designs and runs tailor-made courses for organizational clients based on their specific needs.
